Compare And Contrast The Gods In Ovid And The Aeneid

The main objective of the essay is to compare the roles of the gods as shown in Ovid’s book and Virgil’s book. The gods are perceived to be differently described in the two books and that makes the analysis of the gods in the essay to be conclusive. Ovid and Virgil are writers in the epic tradition but the way they treat gods in Aeneid and metamorphoses displays a difference. Aeneid was written between 29BC up to 19BC after the battle of Actium was fought in 31BC. The Aeneid was written as a celebration of the various achievements of Augustus and helps in rejoicing the development of Rome during that period of time. The book displays a lot of political propaganda as well as the history of the origin of the Roman people. The perception of the gods is able to bring the perspective that they are higher beings wh o find it worthless to interact with the humans. The gods in Aeneid are rare to appear in mortal characters as opposed to Ovid’s book whereby some of them can be able to appear in mortal characters. Venus in Aeneid is able to take herself as the Huntress when they met with Aeneas in order to tell him that he is in Carthage (Groves 326). Aeneas further realize that Venus was his mother. Comparing them with the Ovidian gods, the gods were perceived to be appearing in their normal forms and that made them interact freely (Ovid 42). Apollo, Venus, and mercury are some of the gods who are perceived to be appearing as themselves and that brought the perception of peace as well as it strongly highlights the informalities which were surrounding the various gods (Roman 258). In situations were the gods were not appearing in human forms, they were represented in animal forms. This can be shown by the way Jupiter appeared as a bull as shown in the book. Homer and Odyssey were considered to be the two main models of epic representations of the essay according to Ovid and Virgil in their work. There is a lot of influence specifically the Homeric influence when it came to the Virgilian gods.
